Sustainable Ceramics

I love a challenge and was happy to be invited by Studio Frostwood to work with some pieces of their glaze waste as part of a really exciting project. They also invited other makers to make use of their studio waste streams along with researching into more sustainable ceramic processes.

Ceramic glaze is partly made from stone, silica which is taken from quartz so I thought it would cut in a similar way. I cut circles to fit into my interchangeable ring. The effect of the glaze once cut looks like tiny galaxies. All completely unique.

Susancastillophoto has captured the results beautifully.

Studio Frostwood are Natalie J Wood and Hazel Frost Ceramics who are based in Edinburgh.

Other makers who have been exploring different ceramic waste in their studio include

Chalk Plaster

Studio Emma

Kate Trouw jewellery

All others work who I adore can’t wait to see it all.

An exhibition was be held on 1-3rd September at Whitespace in Edinburgh if you want to find out more or take a closer look.

Images also of the clay ‘rocks’ before they were cut.

You can read more about the project over on thier website here you can access the full sustainability report made as part of the project.
