Stories, Rocks, Colours, Markers
Bookends for Dundee Design Festival Commission
It was a real joy to have a little bit of time to play and have the freedom to explore my fascination with pigments and the way they evolve over time. Often starting as rocks and minerals the materials are processed and transformed into a medium that harnesses the potential to represent culture, time and place.
Responding to a brief about two women writers from Dundee that travelled the world in the 1890’s I have used 10 pigments that connect to the 10 places Bessie and Marie travelled to as a coating material for small cairn sculptures.
I am interested in how cairns can function as individual markers of our presence. The sculptures can be reconfigured and stacked into multiple variations to make the bookends more interactive and echo the nature of piling rocks.
Thanks to Dundee Design Festival Dr Stacey Hunter for the invitation.
